As of this last weekend we have a new rug in our living room!

Vintage Style Rug - The Adored Abode

I originally bought this rug for our bedroom refresh since our previous bedroom rug was not holding up and got the boot to the guest room (that has much less foot traffic), but once this new rug was delivered I had a feeling it would end up in our living room, with our lighter living room rug going in our bedroom instead. I love the lighter rug we had in the living room and it has held up great the 2 years we’ve had it, but I think with the white paneled walls in our living room we needed a bit more color in the rug. It was a happy accident to order this rug for the bedroom and have it work out so nicely for the living room instead! It just so happens both the living room and our bedroom need a 9×12 size rug! The bonus is if we decide to put it the new rug in the bedroom down the road we can easily (with a lot of furniture shifting) swap the two rugs!

Rug size tip: I generally say go a little bigger on the rug than you think – my rule of thumb in a living room is each piece of future (couch, chairs, coffee table, etc.) should have at least a “foot” on the rug. A proper sized rug really helps a space feel put together and complete!

I love the colors and warmth the new rug adds to the living room. I was a little unsure of how I would like it next to the fireplace since the fireplace is already a huge, busy focal point in the room. Nathan loves it in the living room, and I like it alright next to the fireplace, but it’s growing on me day by day because I do love the cozy factor it brings to our living room!

ONE LIVING ROOM – TWO LOOKS

I thought it would be fun to show the two looks of our living room side by side. I really like both, but I love how cozy the room feels now with the new rug. With the new rug I decided to swap our wood coffee table that was in the den with the green ottoman.

The new rug and wood coffee table really add warmth and make the room feel more inviting, where the lighter rug and bold ottoman give the room a more modern and brighter feel.

Our bedroom has blue/gray walls, so I think the lighter rug looks great in there – more to come on bedroom refresh in a separate post!

RUG DETAILS & FIRST IMPRESSIONS

I love the colors of our new rug. The background is mostly navy (it really reads more as black than navy though), olive and tan. There are hints of pink and red in the rug as well, which I really like because it’s not overwhelming, just a nice touch of color!

Even though I read ALL the reviews on this rug, I was still a little surprised when I unrolled it. It is very thin and has a very low pile. I purchased a rug pad for this very reason and it makes the rug feel much cushier! The backing of the rug is almost a denim type material. The rug is soft, but not overly soft, but it is definitely comfortable underfoot.

The edges of the rug are stitched in a cross pattern, rather than fringe like a typical vintage or vintage style rug. When you look up close at the detail it has some difference from a typical vintage rug, but I like that it gives the vintage feel without costing what a typical vintage or wool rug does. In this season of my life it doesn’t make sense to spend $1,000+ on a rug with all the renovation projects we have in the works already this year – I’m looking at you upstairs bathroom, tree trimming, and exterior painting. Though I have several smaller vintage rugs and know they wear extremely well, I still can’t justify spending that much on a larger vintage or wool rug at this current point in time, which is why I was so very happy to find this rug!

One thing I really love about this rug is the pattern. I have a feeling it will hide dirt very well! Maybe too well. I am big about liking to “know when things are dirty”, which is why I really don’t mind having lighter colored textile materials in my home – the previous lighter rug in our living room, our lighter sofa, light colored bed linens… you get the point. Especially with two rambunctious dogs things get dirty fast between dog hair and dirt. I will have to take extra care outside of regular vacuuming to spot clean the rug because the dirt isn’t going to show as easily as it did on the lighter rug. I’ve been eyeing this Bissell for just that reason.

So far, I am very happy with the rug and very glad we got it! I really feel like it has helped take our living room in the direction of the overall feel I want for our home: inviting, cozy, and classic with touches of modern and rustic elements.

      1. I got it from a local second hand store, but both Pottery Barn and Target have one in a similar style!
