Fall One Room Challenge – Week 2: The Plans

October 11, 2018

It’s week two of the One Room Challenge. If you missed the first week you can catch up on it here!

If you are new to the blog, welcome! I am a financial auditor by day and started this blog to pursue my passion of design, renovation, and all things home. We bought our house two and half years ago and are slowly renovating it room by room.

We are overhauling an upstairs bedroom that we are transforming into an office for this challenge. We started with a room full of boxes housing office supplies, craft supplies, and random décor. This past week we completely emptied the space, so it is ready to be transformed.

I am putting a focus on re-using and re-purposing items we already own to complete this space, except for the office chair, rug, and window covering. Both the chair and rug (similar) have arrived, and I LOVE them both. It really helped solidify the design and vibe I was going for in the office. I still have to decide on the window covering for this space, but I am leaning toward a roman shade. Simple and classic. Since it’s an office I am not too worried about light-blocking or black out shades, so I am thinking of going with something a bit lighter and airier.

I took advantage of my three-day weekend (thanks to Columbus Day – one perk of working for a bank!) and got right to painting the room once everything was cleared out. I painted the walls a really pretty, muted green-y gray: Sherwin Williams Woody Rosemary. The color is so calming to me and is one of those colors that changes a lot depending on the light, which I love. Before the challenge started we already had new flooring and new baseboards installed in the room, but we kept the existing door and window casings. The casings were originally wood, so before painting the walls I started by priming the casings (I also do 2 coats of primer over wood – or else in my experience the paint tends to yellow over time!). Now that I have the walls painting I will put 2 final coats of trim paint on all of the trim; baseboards, window casing, and door casings. The trim paint we have used throughout the whole house is Benjamin Moore Simply White.

The room is already feels completely different! The power of paint is magical.

Here’s everything we have left to get the space completed:

  • clean everything out of the room/organize/donate unused items
  • prime: window and door casings
  • paint: walls, baseboards, closet, and closet doors
  • wallpaper the closet (leftover material we have from a previous project)
  • install Ikea closet organizing system (leftover material we have from a previous project)
  • order and install a window covering
  • order a rug
  • order a desk chair
  • DIY a giant mood board/pinboard
  • makeover existing filing cabinet (paint & hardware)
  • paint storage cabinet
  • hang art
  • organize, decorate and style the space!

There’s a lot to do for this space, but hopefully we can knock a good chunk out this weekend! I’ll be back with weekly updates for each of the next 4 weeks, but in the meantime be sure to check out the other participants here. As always, I would love for you to follow along as we make over this space! Follow along on Instagram for more updates along the way!
