One Room Challenge Week 2: Painted Tile Progress

October 12, 2017

I can’t believe we are already a week in to the One Room Challenge.

As I mentioned last week we will be completing our laundry room (which is also our pantry and what we call our “dog room”) for this 6 week challenge. You can catch up on week 1 here.

Last weekend we spent time clearing everything out of the laundry room and giving the room, especially the floor, a deep clean as we got ready to paint and stencil our tile floor!

On Monday (I had the day off thanks to Columbus Day) I painted the base coat on the floor and started stenciling. When I started with the base layer of white on the tile I had a bit of a freak out…OH MY GOSH, WHY AM I PAINTING MY TILE?!?! I quickly settled down once I realized the painted floor was so much better than the dirty looking tile (in my opinion).

Once the base coat (I applied 3 coats of white) was dry I started the more tedious work of stenciling… and once the stenciling is finished I will seal the floor with polyurethane. I will do a much, much more detailed post about how to paint tile, but for purposes of this ORC update I figured a summary would suffice.

So that is where we are today. We have cleared the room and the floor has been painted! This weekend we are going to move our washer and dryer back in from their temporary spot in our breakfast nook and stack them in the laundry room. We are hoping to build out a “built-in box” for the washer and dryer, install the wallpaper, and install the remaining cabinets (if we have time). I might be in the overzealous camp for what we can accomplish over a short weekend, but the next weekend we will be out of town because we are going camping so I am starting to feel the time crunch… I definitely want to have this room completely finished in the 6 week timeline and don’t want it dragging on for a month or two afterward (ahem, our powder room project).

Below is the list of items we plan to complete in the next 4 short weeks:

  • Seal floor
  • Install wallpaper
  • Stack washer/dryer
  • Install cabinets (around washer/dryer & on opposite wall for pantry)
  • Add backsplash above laundry counter next to washer/dryer
  • Install built-in dog feeding station
  • Install open shelving above pantry cabinets/counter
  • Add window treatment
  • Create organized pantry storage
  • Hang artwork

As a reminder, here is the design board I created for the space, I am so excited to watch it come to life!

That’s where we are, folks! Be sure to check out the rest of the ORC participates here!

    1. This looks so good! I’m thinking about doing something similar. Is your tile completely smooth? The tile I’d like to paint has a little bit of rough texture, so I’m thinking it might not look right if I paint it with a pattern (like I’d like to). But if yours is textured, and it looks this good, then maybe I’ll go for it.

      1. Ours is very smooth tile. I would have to see a picture of the textured tile to tell you for sure… but I think a little texture wouldn’t be a big deal!
