One Room Challenge Week 1: Hall Bath Befores

October 6, 2016

I am excited to announce that I am participating in my first ever One Room Challenge!orc-logoFor those who are unfamiliar, the One Room Challenge by Calling it Home is a twice-yearly event that challenges design bloggers to transform a room in 6 weeks. I am joining this fall edition of the One Room Challenge as a guest participant. While I am not one of the 20 featured design bloggers participating, I will be participating and accepting the challenge of transforming a room in 6 short weeks! I will be posting updates to the blog on Thursdays every week, with the final reveal of my room the 6th week.

If you are new to the blog, welcome! I am an accountant by day and started this blog as a way to pursue my passion of design, décor, and all things home. My husband and I recently purchased a house that needs a little love, which we are slowly renovating as our time and budget allows. Truthfully our whole house is in the middle of a huge transformation, but I thought this challenge came at a perfect time because we have started transforming most of the rooms on our main floor and it feels like we have done a done of work, but none of the rooms are “done”, or even remotely close. Choosing one room to tackle from start to finish is just what we need right now!

It was an easy choice: the main floor hall bath.

These pictures were taken shortly after we moved in. A perfectly fine and functional bathroom, but the finishings were not at all our taste. We could not wait to get rid of the faux-marble seashell shaped sinks. It also felt very dark and cramped, even though it is a decent size hall bath. We knew everything had to go, so we completely gutted it; vanity, mirror, toilet, and flooring.

This is the current state of the room as it was yesterday waiting for the hardwoods to be installed. Now we have a blank slate!

I hate to admit it, but we gutted this room over 1 month ago and it has sat in its empty ever since. We thought we would get our flooring in shortly after we gutted it. Wrong. For multiple reason (I will do a detailed flooring post in the near future) getting new hardwood flooring throughout the main level, including the hall guest bath, took much longer than expected and pushed all of our other projects back. The good news is our flooring is going in this week so now we can move forward with our projects and a working hall bath is top on the priority list.

We want a bathroom that feels classic, with rustic and modern touches.

Here’s the plan:

  • Install plank wall treatment ¾ up the walls
  • Paint or stencil the top ¼ of the walls
  • Install pedestal sink & faucet
  • Install toilet
  • Install new shelves in linen closet
  • Install new door knobs
  • Convert recessed light to pendant light
  • Install new light fixture
  • Hang mirror
  • Install toilet paper holder & towel bar
  • New rug
  • Hang artwork

I’ll be back next week to discuss the sources I plan to use and the progress we have made. Don’t miss the other participants posts – you can find all the One Room Challenge link ups here.
